Imagery is used to is used to help the reader envision what the characters are going through at that specific moment. Hosseini incorporates imagery in this section to help the reader envision what Amir is seeing. The way he describes Ali walking over to them and the way he says he hugged them really paints a picture for the reader. It emphasizes the point that they boys need comfort during this time while also demonstrating the value of traditional gender roles. Typically, the mother would comfort the children and the man would do his best to keep them safe but because it is only the boys and Ali and they boys have no maternal figure present at the time, he must take on both roles. It's not a direct example of traditional roles but they are both represented within one character.
